4. Language and Embodiment

Language in factical life is originally face-to-face speech, and in this setting embodiment plays an essential role—not in the sense of explaining language by way of physiological, neurological, or organic causes (although such domains can be contextually relevant), but the lived body that engages in communicative practices.[24] It is here that a phenomenology of gesture, facial expression, and sound enters the picture. The idea of “body language” is familiar, especially how the body can communicate in a nonverbal manner, sometimes in subtle ways that can belie verbal expression (for instance, tightly folded arms giving away animosity or apprehension). There is even a deeper sense in which corporeal expression is intrinsic to lived speech, which will be developed in coming discussions of language acquisition, orality, and literacy. For now, we can note the importance of gesture, facial expression, and sound in verbal communication, in a manner that cannot really be called “nonverbal” but rather sub-verbal. Such corporeal elements are often thought to be at best peripheral to language, but they seem to be intertwined with speech in a constitutive manner.[25]
